Dare to Dream – A Year In Review with Tamara O’Brien

A Year in Review…..Tamara O’Brien

The start to this year was in November 2011 when Tamara boarded the plane bound for London Heathrow, the final destination was Birmingham, for the World Age Group Championships. Qualifying for two events, Tumbling and Double Mini Tramp, Tamara was ready to go.

On the day of Double Mini competition Tamara did well and ended the preliminary round in 1st place by 2 points. Unfortunately do to a mishap in finals; she ended up in 7th place in the World. This is still a fantastic result, as there were a total of 38 competitors in the field.

In Tumbling, the competition was fierce, Tamara competing against the top Russian tumblers, came in an impressive 5th in the World.

At the end of World Age Groups, Tamara had a problem with her shin; we discovered when we came home, that there was a stress fracture in her leg, so she was given a few weeks off to let things heal. Not competing in the 1st Trials this year was a good decision, as the leg seems to be doing well.

So in February, Tamara was back competing for 2nd Trials, trying to qualify for National Championships. She did well, placing 1st in Tumbling and Double Mini Tramp, and successfully making her qualifying score for Nationals. This is the first of three scores that need to be made in order to obtain some funding for travel.

3rd Trials was Hosted by our club, TAG Sports Centre, located in Port Coquitlam. Once again Tamara came away with 1st in Tumbling and Double Mini Tramp, as well, earning the qualifying score for Nationals. She has now earned some funding from Gymnastics BC towards her travel to Regina for National Championships.

At the end of March we headed up to Kamloops to compete in the BC Championships, where Tamara placed 1st in Tumbling and Double Mini, and 4th in Trampoline. Her performance earned her the title of BC National Provincial Champion. Having ended the local competitive season on a very high note, Tamara is feeling good about her year.

At the present time Tamara is working hard putting together some new passes for Nationals, in hopes of bringing home some hardware from Regina and qualifying for the next event which is Indo Pacific Championships to be held in Sydney, Australia on October 13th through 21st. As this is an Olympic year, there are no world championships being held, so the next largest event is Indo-Pacific’s. Originally set up to give athletes from non European countries the opportunity to compete in a major international event, it has been constantly growing in size since it began in 1991. This is the next targeted event for Tamara to attend, counting on a good finish at Nationals and Canada Cup.

Canada Cup is being held in Langley at the Langley Events Centre, this will have athletes in attendance from all over the world. We have confirmed delegations arriving from China, Japan, England and Ireland and possibly Russia. This is a great event for any of you wishing to see the sport in action, with some of the top contenders in the world, Tamara being one of them.

We are flying out on May 21st to attend the Canadian National Gymnastics Championships. We will be arriving Monday afternoon and competition begins on Wednesday the 23rd. There will be a web cam showing all events at Nationals, you can watch Tamara compete live in Regina the link is www.gymnastics2012.ca. I will do my best to advise the times she will be competing on the website.

I cant express enough the gratitude that Tamara and I have for the “Dare to Dream” foundation and for the support it is giving to Tamara. If it was not for all of you great people, she would not be doing this sport at this level, you truly are giving her the ability to “dare to dream”…..
